Civil War Books and CD ROMsMemoirs of the 149th Regiment N. Y. Volunteer Infantry, 3d Brigade, 2d Division, 12th and 20th A.C - This is the regimental history written by Capt. George K. Collins. It was first published in 1891, but has recently been republished and is now available again. What is most interesting about this book is not its military history (for it really does little to address that), but its insight to the everyday life of the members of the unit. Stories of the marches and train rides from one location to another. Stories of the towns they traveled through and the sites they saw. Stories of the friendly interactions that they had with their oposition. It provides a real insight into their lives and hardships and what made them the quality regiment that they were. This is a must have book for anyone with a real interest in the 149th. War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies - Known commonly as the Official Record (OR). This is a 128 volume set of books that contain all of the battle records from each of the commanders. The OR is again being published by Morningside. A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion. Frederick H. Dyer. Lists battles and campaigns for Union regiments and also gives the composition of corps and armies, i.e., such as the Army of the Potomac. The Civil War CD-ROM: The War of the Rebellion - This CD includes both the OR and Dyer's Compendium. I really can not say enough about this CD-ROM. I have been able to quickly research any Civil War unit that I have been interested in. Gettysburg: Culp's Hill & Cemetary Hill by Harry Pfanz. Culp's hill was the location where the 149th fought at Gettysburg. An important and mostly overlooked portion of the battle, Mr. Pfanz's research organized in this book will help to ensure that it is overlooked no longer.
