Lt. Col. Randall

Lt. Col. Charles Randall:  This portrait came from Ellen Lowe.  She sent  a request for information regarding Col. Randall and explained that she had this portrait.  She was nice enough to have it scanned and sent a copy for everyone to share.

It is interesting to note that it appears his arm is bandaged.  He was shot in the arm and lung at Gettysburg, so the bandages seen here may be due to those injuries.

mending the flag This is a picture of Color Sergeant William Lilly mending the flag standard at Culp's Hill during the battle of Gettysburg.   The staff had been shot and broken by enemy gun fire.  Sgt. Lilly jumped over the breastworks, grabbed the flag, and returned to a position behind the others.  He mended the flag with wood from a cracker box and straps from a knapsack.

This picture is cast in bronze on the regiment's monument on Culp's Hill at Gettysburg and on the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Syracuse.

Read about the efforts to preserve the flag today.

This photo of Harrison Pool of Company F at age 20, was sent to us by Gary Poole, Harrison's Great Grandson.

Harrison and his brother William Henry were originally from Ellisburg, New York. They enlisted together in Syracuse under the name Johnson and claimed they were from Manluis.

Will Henry died from wounds suffered at Chancellorsville.

This photo of the Regimental Surgeon, Dr. James V. Kendall, was sent to us by Leigh Harrison who now lives in his house.

Robin Moore passed on to us this photo of Peter Kappesser, one of the Medal of Honor recipients from the 149th.

Captain George Collins was a Lieutenant in Company I and the author of the regimental history.
