Civil War Genealogy

One reason that many people come to this site is to learn about their ancestors that were in the Civil War.  Each day, more and more information about the men in the Civil War is being placed on the web.  All information that is sent to me about the men of the 149th will be added to these pages for others to use, unless you ask otherwise.

How to get started

As with any genealogy project, start with what you know.  Your documentation should start with yourself, and then your parents, grandparents, etc. Write down information on all of the important events in each person's life, but at least their birth, death, and marriage dates and the places where each occurred.  The state and local governments keep records of each of these.

If you do not have copies of the state certificates for these event you can write and get a copy for a small charge.  These certificates will guide you to the next person.  New York started keeping these records sometime after the Civil War, so you should be able to work your way back to your Civil War relative with these.

You can also start from your Civil War relative.  The US government gave pensions to the veterans and their widows or parents.  Wonderful documentation was kept in the pension records of the men, most time including the names of their wife and children with a little information on each.  Information on obtaining pension records can be found in a link below.

Cyndi's List This is the list for genealogy on the web.  Cyndi has complied links to virtually every site on the internet with genealogical information.  Most of the Civil War units with sites on the web are listed here.

How To Order Military & Pension Records for Union Civil War Veterans from the National Archives By Cyndi Howells - A step-by-step tutorial for getting information from the National Archives.  There is information on everyone who applied for a pension for his service to the Union in the Civil War stored in the National Archives.  For about $10, they will make copies of the applications and send them to you.  The information there is wonderful, usually listing their family members, where they lived, their occupation, and their medical information.  Everyone with a Civil War ancestor should spend the money and get this information.
