A Brief word on Recruits. Today we may think of recruits as soldiers
or sailors who are just entering boot camp and have no rank. This was
not the case for the recruits of the 149th during the Civil War.
During the war the regiment continued to solicit for enlistments and Col.
Barnum himself returned to Syracuse to encourage men to
enlist. Recruits were men who joined the regiment after the regiment was
formed and were privates.
The war ended before the enlistment period for most recruits was over and
they were transferred to the 102nd New York.
