John H. Patterson enlisted September 2, 1862 as a private in Company D at the
age of 22, and the same day was transferred to non-commissioned staff as Com.
Sergeant. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Company B August 1,
1864, under a commission dated July 14, 1864, rank July 3, 1864, and mustered
out of service with that same company.
He received commission of 1st Lieutenant dated October 21, 1864,
rank August 7, 1864, but not mustered. Brevetted Captain.
