Henry N. Burhans was mustered into the U.S. service as a 1st
Lieutenant at Syracuse, N.Y. on September 18, 1862, at the age of 23, under a
commission dated October 4, 1862, rank September 9, 1862. He was
promoted to Captain under a commission dated November 24, 1962, rank October
21, 1862 and to Major under a commission dated May 11, 1865, rank same
date. He received a commission as Lieutenant Colonel dated June 7, 1865,
rank June 11, but was not mustered. Brevetted Colonel.
He was detached as Judge Advocate on the staff of General
Geary at Atlanta, Ga., about August 22, 1864. He was later assigned to
duty as Provost-Marshal at Savannah.
In the absence of Major
Grumbach he commanded the regiment as Captain from Savannah to
Goldsboro. Mustered as Major June 12, 1865.
After the war he was a hardware merchant.
